Check this out...April 4th Zoom Gallery. Some great work in there and I'm stoked that Mark used this shot of mine of FK, a previously unpublished gem from Winter 2009.

My snow photog buddy Mark Kohlman compiles this for ESPN every now and again, which is a pretty cool gig. Be sure to check out his photography. Mark used to live in Portland, but when we moved here he left. Just kidding. Well, he did actually, and now resides in Brooklyn. Saw him recently in Vermont with some other old photographer friends Shem Roose and the Huffman brothers. Seems like everyone is off to NYC these days.

We missed the buffet. The sushi, on Sunday night, at Wiegele's. Won't do that again. Ended up with Poutine in Clearwater...don't do it. Damn. It's been a busy few weeks, let me back up.

Did a Burton's Women shoot down in Big Bear Lake, California. Bear Mt staff is hands down best in the biz . Thanks guys. I like that place, especially since it's a mountaintop finish on a stage of this year's Tour of California...might have to go down and check it.

Park to the wild...Cali to AK...whew. Hooked up with a Standard Film's crew in Haines for a week. Short window but Kazu got it done. You saw him in the Olympic's right? Style.

And then back to the piste. VT. State of Hate as EK used to call it. Well, you know what, it was an epic weekend Back East...warm, sunny, happy people on bikes everywhere...a perfect one for The Open.

And Kazu and I killed the pipe! That kid is talented...pow to pipe...winning all the way. This was my first day shooting with my new Mark IV...this coulda been on the first roll of film (miss that stuff)..BAM..COVER! I got lucky.

Then straight from Rut-Vegas to Kamloops via Jake's ticket to ride..I got the window seat, or was it an aisle? Here's a Tarantino moment from our arrival--

Jake brought his son Taylor on the trip. He earned the MW dining room 'ski tip of the day' toast with this beauty of a NoBoard run...good shit that kid.

If there was only a video guy there we'd have killed it...oh wait, CinemaSeoane was there, but he shoots stills now...no wait, video on his still camera...

And then back to P-Town to ride with the boys....Spring is definately in the air....

Winter. Day 1.

Blog-tech for 2010...starts now.

I knew I was in Colorado when my supersized rental car had it's satellite radio pretuned to the Grateful Dead station.

Quick overnight in Boulder and hit the two hour jaunt up I-70 (radio Colorado continued...two Dave Matthew's Band, a Big Head Todd...you get the idea..) and settled in Summit County. Felt like I never left. Bumped into Todd Franzen and Ron Bureta..cool to see old and classic CO faces.

The Copper pipe is a short walk from the parking lot. Nice to settle in with that dull, monotone hum, or rather the buzz, of the freeway nestled right there.

Just watching the tricks that were getting thrown down in the two hours I was pipe-side was inspiring.
Izzo and Vito were the first I saw...Wow, Louie Vito fresh from his dirty dancing on the screen of millions and I almost asked for an autograph. Yeah, Vancouver seems like a cakewalk in comparison, he mumbled. Or something like that. I think SW is perhaps the only kink in his plans. Next level shredding is the word on the street for these two guys.

And then there was Bud. You know, Bud, Bud Keene. And this time, HE wasted no time getting into it..I could only listen as my jaw dropped with his up to the minute account of yesterday's 'snowboarder in lift line be nice to the falling skier' story where apparently he went to help a woman and in the process ended up snapping his bicep! Can you do that? Bust your muscle?

Cole brought it all, sans heli. Maybe that's tomorrow. Nike budget's love heli's. He's killing it though, and I love that kid.

These guys were from the New York Times, I think. I could be wrong. Teeter was all scarfed up and doing something special for some out of town NY'ers...hope they nailed it. You get the shot? I think so. You? Yeah, I think so. Yeah, we got it. I think it went something like that. I bet they blew it. New York won't know the difference anyways.

Ok, now back to the snowboarding. Pearce was here ripping, I think Cole got a few goods ones, i was too busy dusting off my busted MarkIII from the Grilo incident in NZ recently, but that's another story. Kevin goes huge and I really think it has to do with all of the carbon on his setup. I love carbon, it reminds me of my other life. I love the C60's...I ride them too, just like KP. I can't go big like him, but my setup is light and stiff, like Lance's Madone. Carbon is hot. You should try these bindings...upgrade your plastic to the carbon...you won't be sorry.

It doesn't stop there. Pearce really knows what is up. I guess it's Jake who know what's up, and Paul. Paul Smith that is. If you like bikes, pushbikes, then you're gonna love this....it's all there for the making....the office, the library, Cav, the move, and the soundtrack, I'll take this tune for my life please. I bet he popped a trackstand in front of the taxis in London on his way to work. Damn, when I grow up....

BAM...the Paul Smith Vapor. Isn't Christmas coming up soon? One for me please.

Kazu matched his mouthguard to his RED helmet. Damn! The kid loves his green. And then he went into a nice little story telling me that he recently got married over in Japan...ahh life.
And then here comes Davis again with some nice 'kaws-esque' graphic work he tagged up his AG pants with....perfectly and sloppily matching his Easy Livin' board...now that's something Hunter S. would love. Look for Danny's doodling in some new AG designs soon (just kidding, I made that up.)

After a few ultra-spinny and bangin' runs, Davis pulled out a good one. He might have shared this beauty with Cole, just for being a bud.

Sales pitch number two, or was it three? My board, did I mention what I'm riding this week? Damn, just the sickest board ever that's all...you gotta check it, well, I gotta ride it first, but i know it's gonna be PRO. Hell, it's got Titanium edges for God's sake...I think it'll rival my favorite Burton product of all time...next time.

Day 1, Winter 2010 ( I mean 2009)...done. Action shots=0. Egg. Nothing. But at least this blog is going, and at least it's Winter!

Road to Nowhere

Somewhere in the Oregon high desert, bound for Bend. The final final of the CX season 2009...two chances to go fast....

I got the miracle ticket front row call up for the SS race on Friday, unfortunately didn't have the ice skating skills to get it going up to speed. Equal time on the ground as on the bike it seemed, sloppy ride good enough for a 16th though. Good thing a snowboarder won. Next year...

Beautiful conditions for the Saturday's Masters race...mud without rain, gotta love the thaw. All things go on this one, despite the 100+ deep start position and the massive leadout road pileup....pinball skills helped.

And just like that, it's over...could there be a better shot to sum up the season? I don't think so. Brother Mike killing a camo milw brew making the hometown crowd pleased. Cheers pdxcross.com nailing this one. A perfect transition to the winter that comes NOW.

A long overdue ride with friends from the front door to the start line...in rainbows, sleet, wind and yes, the gorgeous sun....gotta love Portland. Pinned up and ready to go, preriding was out of the question by the looks of the earlier racers bikes. Line it up and go....that was the only plan, not to mention the goal of the SS and the A races...why not, it's almost winter....it should make the weeks ahead that much faster..that's the plan anyways.

World Class racing right in the backyard...add text book conditions, the series overall winner separated by mere points, the best photography in the biz, waffles, beers, a cheering family, a first timer mate from Oz on a borrowed Surly from a legendary shop...BAM..PERFECT DAY.

Blow by blow here, and the paperwork here. Do yourself the favor and look at the photos...they are moving. Well done gentlemen. The inspirations go on and on....Sacha White nailing it in the SS's in denim, the above mentioned Aussie getting his first taste of CX mud, my family around all day and cheering all over the course, Ryan from Veloshop's incredible shoutouts to keep 'em turning...epic. And Steven Hunter...legendary speedster...amazing pulls today...bravo. Great racing bro. The pain, the hardship, the heartbreak...it definately keeps ya coming back for more...gotta love this sport. Epic.

Saturday's Salem State Champs...a nice warmup to Sunday's chaos....

Read all about it...the SSCXWC was everything and more. Holeshotted the Lemans-style U-turn start and hit the first runup 4th wheel..246 chasing....it was all turning perfectly...we pulled away as the chaos unfolded behind. Of course it did, it was supposed to. Shortcuts galore brought some familiar faces into the mix and then it was over...three laps into the five/six and a puncture took down the Dugast. Sliced. Did someone throw a handful of nails in the water? Maybe I ran over a beer bottle? A perfect ending to a damn fun start...Ha. Next year. Next year Seattle...

JD rolled out the new bike..just in time for the good stuff...the conditions of dreams. Souls rejoice.

Just enough time in the saddle to dirty myself up nicely before the self pulled number and time to stop...the rawness of the flesh couldn't control the machine....next week's double will thank me kindly.

Meanwhile back in Wisco, flooding turned the courses into cancellations but thankfully those that wanna ride did...taking it all into their own hands, making a few calls, and getting together 20 or so racers to make something outta nothing...gotta love that. Nicely done boys.

turn out the lights and strip away 21 of the choices and the bike seems to move...the third step and finally it feels like all is turning. As long as the pavement doesn't win the battle again with the 1-0 knockout punch that sent me sliding as the race went down the road....loss of skin and the shredded kit feeling the pain as the chase couldn't close it down.

Hulick ziptied the shifter and spun the black circle with the rest of us, what a treat to get to pedal on his wheel and take a few turns working together on the machines.

The conditions are shaping up nicely for another good weekend in the dirt.

CX in full swing nationwide...CC two down, more to come. Last row starts make it near impossible to even see the race go out the road in front, so chase it is and slowly the dust will settle and the finishes will bump up...hopefully...two medium finishes with so much improvement on the horizon. The fast guys are all there, that's for sure...Tonkin, Skerritt, Blackwelder, Hulick, Cameron....all flying.

Watching the epic fireworks throughout the escalation of the Giant is enough to make anyone wanna go out and find their own piece that tips up...PTown ain't no Provence but we've got Larch and a TT up the 3K some foot ele gain over the 16miles on Sunday felt like the right thing to do. No records set but the SV moved nicely in my first cat3 start...and all before the real temps blanketed the city and the dwellers scampered to whatever water they could find.

Monday was another scorcher...how hard can 30 minutes really hurt anyways? The DeSalvo slimmed down to sub17 with the Furious Freds mounted and aired, ready for the hard dry dirt that the course revealed last year...how did I miss the memo that mentioned 'mud romp'? Fires hoses cooling it all off nicely while at the same time turning portions of the superfun motoXcourse into a slopfest...54%...that's about the amount of time I actually was upright pedaling....dress shoes on frozen lake, ballbearing walk in your slippers...you got the idea. At least a half dozen times down and just shy of catching the two leaders that slipped away somewhere in the pigs den...let's just say the knobbies are already mounted for next week's final and I'll be sure to keep the redcones on the right, the yellow on the left...Goodstuff out there for sure...CX is nearing....just gotta get this winter trip outta the way....

Got the bump to Cat3...Tour of America's Dairyland wrapped nicely with 3 top ten's on the road events and a bunch finish after a solid 50 minutes on the front on my first crit...overall ended up 3rd for the 4/5's (despite the online erroroneous results).

Next up...more dirt...Wisconsin Singlespeed Championships at Levis tomorrow...can't think of a better way to spend a Saturday...ride some of the State's best singletrack with my two bros leadin' the charge....

The Tour of America's Dairyland...our 'tour' on the road. Three road races and a downtown crit for our FUEL team of Mike and I...missed ya Joe and thanks for the pulls Sam on the Greenbush route! Damn fun few weeks....lots of miles on the front and enough results to move again...this time from cat 4>3. It's all on track for a good CX season in PDX.

Why wouldn't ya ride this one? Ride down the middle of Downer and Lake Drive, Belgium beer gardens, fan lined streets, cupcakes at registration, and a full support tent by our sponsor? Come on....it's Summer! RIDE HARD!

The pavement was familiar due to the snowy day stomping grounds from back in the day, but it didn't take the edge off of the 44miler that we rolled into early on Thursday morning...day one of the Tour that Mike and I thought would be a nice prelude to Saturday's dirt bike rally.

A third of the way into the first of two laps on the proposed 2016 Olympic course Pinnacle road and it's sharp little climb splintered the field to pieces while the continuing rollers took our lead group to 10, then five. Through the feed station the UW masher lifted the pace and went off the of front....a gap worth closing so a quick acceleration joined me to his wheel and a look under my shoulder confirmed this was our chance to go.

Lap two was just the two of us...working, talking, riding...hitting it hard to stay away from any chasers, but soft enough to enjoy the amazing landscape that makes Wisco so epic. Around and up again and as the road tipped to the sky, the days of pushing up to Skyline back in Portland paid off as nothing separated the SV from the tape...three for three on the road..time for a bump perhaps?

Actually...time for alot of bumps...simply time for the dirt....there will be plenty to chase out there....864 is ready....

PDX departure was the hardest part, and now that the Midwestern sky welcomes me back, the racing schedule tightens and the fun begins...three paved and two dirt bike events on the agenda...the first being the proposed 2016 Olympic road event in Blue Mounds...the Ventoux of the Midwest? We'll see how it goes up...

Fuel Vs. The Volcano

Tuesday night spin down to Sellwood and back...maybe it was the headwind, or perhaps the rubbing brakepad, or maybe I was just sucking...anyways, felt like the owner of this 'was sweet' Merlin XLM must feel on the daily trips to the park...longhaulin' em down to the jungle gym! Beats collecting dust in the garage I suppose.

Wed morning rain made the 1st of the Tabor Series races less than inviting...a few Chemex pots of Fuel/Alterra fresh from Milwaukee and the clearing afternoon skies changed that...kissed the bub goodnight and pedaled over to see how the scene was shaping up...8 laps for the cat 4's and we were off.

What a venue for a Wednesday night bike race...epic. Lucky to live in Portland. The SV rolled smoothly...METAL seems to be feeling better than plastic these days.
With one to go and Kic on the sidelines, the mountain biker instinct and the anxiety of waiting allowed the twitch free for a test....how bad could one lap feel anyways? Nothing compared to a night at the Beech back in Wisco or what the real men were to feel as they climbed the Geant de Provence the next day....quick look back and no one was there..so head down and drill it solo lappin' to the tape..

Quick weekend blastoff to Wisco....got the machines dialed at GARAGE864 and the new DeSalvo Ti29SS was ready to roll.
WORS XC#2-Crystal Lake Classic up in Rhinelander...an 11 mile loop of the sweetest Wisco singletrack that the preride felt that the 36x18 would feel about right...virgin lineup in the Elite field meant that the chase was sure to be fast and furious (fun as shit riding with ya James)...when the dust settled...the FUEL brothery lineup rolled home in sync...seconds apart after the 2.5 hour epic. Way too much fun...like a cagefight at a birthday party...thank god that the Blatz were flowin'...thanks Polska bros.

Beechwood Tuesday...gettin' in the thick green backwoods with the buds...3 laps to keep 'em in tune as the campfire and the homebrews keep it real.
Joe on the cam landing me on the site...nailing it home. Can hardly wait til next time...the road and the kid fill the gaps...jc

Morning commute to work, AK style. No traffic, no cell phone, no Sarah Palin, no bullshit. Juneau to Haines sold out flight...all five seats that is. Flew over the Kensington Gold Project which currently employs about 200 Haines locals. Work is good. Settling into Haines life and watching the snow fall lightly this morning out of my window.

I just got an email from my editor Ed Blomfield over at the UK based mag

letting me know that they've run a shot of mine for their Spring Issue cover...a pipe shot of Kazu Kokubo from NZ. Here it is:

Anyways, shots like this, and many others that end up filling the pages of mags like Whitelines, TWS get me excited about a new product that I'm receiving today from PocketWizard , the new MiniTT1 and the FlexTT5. Check it. New feature is called HyperSync and it allows faster flash syncing without cutting power at all.

Hopefully this will make shots like this one a bit better...by allowing a faster shutter speed sync, hopefully the motion and ghosting will be minimized. Yeah, we've been able to do this by cheating a faster shutter speed (1/320th, 1/400th) and dealing with the clipping on the unimportant part of the frame, but hopefully this legit system will be a bit cleaner.
